are boards boring?

Community Led action research group

We’re launching a community action group to understand more about why there aren’t more disabled voices at a decision making level in arts organisations.

Our goal is to address the under representation of disabled, D/deaf and neurodivergent people on boards.

We want to create more access to leadership - decision making roles in arts and culture based organisations, including those who are learning disabled neurodiverse, D/deaf, visually impaired or physically disabled.

  • We’re asking people to join us for 6 months, meeting 6 times to work together to research this problem and create new ideas to tackle the issues we uncover.

  • We have a budget to commission people to work with us, such as digital artist, filmmaker or illustrator, to help us bring our ideas to life.

  • We will also pay £60 for each session to cover any expense of attending.

what is a board?

Ever wondered what happens behind those closed doors?

A Board is a group of people who keep an eye on how an organisation is run and what activities they deliver.

Boards need to be made up of people with lots of different skills and backgrounds.

But many boards struggle to attract people with different lived experiences to join them. We did at RAWD which is why we want to find out more about why this is happening.

what is community action research?

Community action research is when people in a community work together to study and solve a problem that affects them.

It’s about finding ways to make things better where everyone in the group has a say and we all bring our knowledge and experiences together to help come up with solutions to a problem.
